How to get Your Neighborhood Covered with
Reflective Home Address and Street Signs

Steps

  1. Find another neighbor or two and drive your roads at night just to prove to someone else that you really do need reflective signs. Now you've created your sign team.

  2. Plan an evening meeting with the help of the local Fire Safe Council and fire department and California Department of Forestry to bring as many neighbors as possible on board. It's OK to discuss all kinds of other safety issues like fire safety and chipping programs, etc.

  3. Use the three options (see next page) to give all your neighbors, regardless of finances, an opportunity to own their own reflective signs. You can make gifts of the smaller and more economical homemade signs.

  4. Call homeowners on each road and ask for one volunteer to be prepared to purchase a street sign for their road. Then ask them to call on their neighbors to help reimburse them or pass the hat at the next social event.

  5. Allow the media to know how well you have done, especially after a year. You deserve a pat on the back and you'll be helping spread the reflective light in the night and perhaps the life you save may be your own.

Where to Get Signs

Option #1: Metal signs recommended by fire department

Highly-reflective green, 2' x 6" background with white silk-screened numbers that can be seen from a long distance; can be used with a 5' post, of which, 2' is placed in ground. Costs about $35.00 or only purchase the sign for $25.00 and place it on your own metal post (see examples).

Option #2: Costs about $12.00 (without metal post)
    Home Depot 911 Address Kit (18" x 7")
Highly-reflective green plastic background with lots of silver-colored numbers inside; preferred placement of sign is on a metal post or wire fencing (see page 4 for example).

Option #3: Costs approximately $15.00* (without metal post)
Use your own metal sign material, preferably no smaller than 12" X 6", then apply highly-reflective tape of solid color at approximately $1.00 per foot (see page 4 for example); these are available from Traffic Control Services in Sacramento, California: Phone: 1-800-884-8274; FAX: 916-387-9734.
Then apply numbers from Home Depot 911 Address Kit; the preferred placement of the sign is on a metal post or wire fencing.

    * Make additional signs even cheaper by using the unused numbers from the Home Depot 911 kit to share with your neighbors.
