About Grizzly Flat
Grizzly Flats encompasses approximately 1,670 acres, made up of 1,235 parcels with approximately 577 homes within the CSD boundary as of April 2006. This community is identified in the Federal Register (dated 8/17/01) as a Community At Risk and has been identified in the Healthy Forests Initiative as one of seven proposed Environmental Assessment Demonstration Projects. There is currently no formal infrastructure in this community. Many residents have moved to Grizzly Flats because of its beauty, natural resources and isolation. They are living in the wildland urban interface and must be made aware of their responsibilities for their homes, neighbors and community. We are proposing the development of a Community Action Plan that will incorporate wildfire safety public education through a series of small meetings with property owners. The plan will identify landowners that are adjacent to public land, advise residents on defensible space requirements for their property, and develop evacuation plans for the community. This will include contracting with a Registered Professional Forester to assist in the planning process. The request for funding also includes a Facilitator who will work closely with the Forest Service, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention and the Pioneer Fire District to plan future vegetation management programs in the public and private sections of the community.
