GRIZZLY FLATS FIRE SAFE COUNCIL
MINUTES OF MEETING
JUNE 2, 2007
- CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Marylou Brown at 10:00 a.m. in the Lodge of
the Grizzly Flats Community Church.
- FLAG SALUTE
Chairperson Brown led the flag salute.
- APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Chairperson asked for any amendments to the agenda. There being none, Mark Almer moved the Agenda
be approved as presented, and Liz Lawless seconded the motion.
- PUBLIC COMMENTS
None.
- MINUTES OF THE MAY 5, 2007 MEETING
Moved by Lee Loney and seconded by Mark Almer to approve as presented.
- FINANCE
Terry Henderson reported a balance of $2,535.77 as of June 2, 2007.
- OLD BUSINESS
- Evacuation Committee Report - Marylou Brown reported that an error had been
made in mapping and subsequently in notification to property owners on Winding Way east of Meadow
Glen, as well as those property owners on Meadow Glen Drive, Forest Glen Drive and on the east
side of Sciaroni Road between Grizzly Flat Road and String Canyon. A letter has been sent to
those property owners on Winding Way which are outside of the Statement of Work advising of the
error and their exclusion from this grant. Further, agreements have been sent to those property
owners on Meadow Glen Drive, Forest Glen Drive and on the east side of Sciaroni Road from Grizzly
Flat Road to String Canyon requesting their participation in the grant for roadside clearing and
requesting a return of the Agreement by June 29th. A total of 216 responses have been returned,
with only 6 "No" responses - almost 41% return Vicki Yorty reported that she planned to send out
the RFP on Monday, June 4th. She set Wednesday, June 13th, at 10:00 a.m. as the date and time for
the site visit with the bidders. Proposals are due July 2, 2007.
- BBQ Fundraiser - Norma Dawdy advised that Kathy Criel had tickets for sale,
packaged in envelopes of 10 adult and 4 children. She passed around the sign-up sheet for
additional volunteers and said that anyone with questions or comments should meet with her
following the Council meeting.
- NEW BUSINESS:
- Firewise Presentation - David Jaramillo spoke to the "firebrand (burning ember)
issues" of home-to-home ignitions. He explained that with the Firewise designation, organizations
such as ours would receive national recognition as well as additional leverage with grant opportunities.
He commended our Fire Safe Council for having advanced so far in fire prevention and education to the
community. The website, www.Firewise.org, provides free information to anyone and a link to them will
be made available on our website.
- Election of Officers - Marylou Brown distributed a ballot of the standing board
members. Additional nominations were made and seconded from the Council for Mark Almer as Chairperson
and Eric Rasbold for 1st ViceChair. After voting, it was announced that the new board members for the
upcoming year will be Mark Almer as Chairperson, Eric Rasbold as 1st ViceChairperson, Kathie Hawkins
as 2nd ViceChairperson, Terry Henderson as Treasurer and Norma Dawdy as Secretary.
- COMMITTEE REPORTS
- NEWSLETTER
Terry Henderson reported she was in receipt of several articles for the next newsletter due out
in July - one requesting additional volunteers for the Council as well as Unit Leaders and one
advertising the BBQ fundraiser. It was also discussed that an article should also be included
indicating the goals of the Grizzly Flats Fire Safe Council.
- MONTHLY EDCFSC REPORT
Walt Tyler reported on the Board Meeting of May 23rd. He spoke of a draft Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) on defensible space which will be presented to the various fire districts in the area. The chipping
program is moving well and green waste vouchers are still available. Vicki Yorty advised that the next
Board Meeting is June 27th at which time a county-wide biomass utilization plan would be discussed. The
District has received a $30,000 grant to do so and Vicki responded that this is a timely program, given
the fuels in the surrounding forests.
- EDCFSC LIAISON
Rich Englefield had nothing additional
- UNIT VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
Mark Almer advised that he still needs a Unit Leader for Unit #6.
- COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Eric Rasbold advised that the Fourth of July parade will assemble at the school at 10:00,
parade at 11:00, followed by a potluck lunch at noon. There would also be bike safety inspections.
The theme of the parade is "Support our Troops".
- DEFENSIBLE SPACE
Judie Irwin reported that units 6 and 7 were finished, thanks to the cooperation of volunteers
and the Pioneer Fire Protection District. Vicki Yorty requested the number of houses visited for a
report she must file. Judie announced the June 9th Defensible Space Class/Workshop at Station 38 at
8:00 a.m. for future advisors. Jana Newman from EDCFSC will be the instructor. Ray Nutting explained
as a member of the local Lions Club, that as a Club Project they had cleared 5 properties last year
for seniors unable to do the work themselves.
- CERT
Liz Lawless recited several recent accidents in our area and the immediate and competent response
by local CERT members. She advised of a recertification class to be held on June 30th for CERT
members and one on June 23rd for traffic control.
- TRESTLE TRAIL
Dennis Henderson reported that the trail has been cleared to the landslide. Once forestry
removes the slide, work will continue later this summer.
- BOARD COMMENTS/ COUNCIL MEMBER COMMENTS
Mark Almer presented Chief Signor with a plaque in appreciation of his dedication and support to our
community. Mark further advised that he had extended an invitation to speak at our August Council Meeting
to the new State Fire Marshal. Finally, he presented two old photos (framed) to Lynn Shetley for the BBQ
raffle of a Caldor Railroad engine in the early 1900's.

- 2nd DISTRICT SUPERVISOR - No representation.
- DOT - No representation.
- PFPD - Chief Signor reported on the previous day's tour of our community with David
Jaramillo of Firewise. He also reported on the tractor accident/entrapment that day and the community's
cooperation through CERT and Search and Rescue's response to the incident. He feels confident that
in time Pioneer Fire Protection District will learn the community's capabilities with regard to
emergencies. He advised that the new chief search application process was closed; he did apply for
the position. He reminded the Council to stay active and involved. Terry Henderson reminded Chief
Signor of a First Aid class being held at Station 38 on June 5th.
- GFCSD - Rich Englefield reported that the CSD is continuing to evaluate two different
properties for a new reservoir. He announced a closed personnel session on Tuesday. The regular
meeting on Tuesday, June 19th, will be a budget meeting at 10:00 a.m., followed by a public meeting
regarding the approved budget and revenue shortfall. The plant is doing well. The District is not
in a drought mode; however, a contingency program is in place should the need arise.
