Ken Hasse called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM and reminded attendees to sign the attendance sheet. He welcomed the members of the Maric Road Homeowners' Association.

Announcements:

  • Two new Board Members at Large of the LFSC were introduced - Bethany Callonea (yellow zone) and Bari Mc Daniel (green zone).
  • Evacuation Routes Two new routes for Crystal Boulevard were mentioned. Mica Road to highway 49 is open for evacuation purposes only. Sodalite Road is also available but a bit rough in spots. Both routes will have locked fire gates. Additional possible routes for other areas are being investigated.
  • E-mail policy - E-mail messages from the LFSC will be sent as "blind copies" so that e-mail addresses of recipients are not shown.

Volcanoville Phone Tree presentation

  • Mary Cornelison - The phone tree is initiated only by the Fire Chief. The Ralston fire came very close to the Volcanoville area which is comprised of about 250 homes with about 180 full time residents. Because of a long, narrow one way road being the only access to the area, a phone tree was initiated and proved to be a very useful tool. Have a "go box" ready in case of evacuation.
  • Winnie Neill - A spread sheet was developed of all residences in the area by going door to door and using El Dorado County parcel maps. The information remains confidential and is used only by the phone tree callers. The message is written down and repeated before being relayed. Reverse 911 calling system or door to door notification is used by the Sheriff's Department to contact people in the event of an actual evacuation. Only local numbers are called when utilizing the Volcanoville phone tree. The importance of having an answering machine was stressed. Phone numbers can be obtained on the Internet at whitepages.com.

Erik Peterson, Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshall - Review of June 18 Training Exercise.

  • The exercise concentrated primarily on Monitor Road with some activity on Crystal Boulevard. The Logtown Fire Safe Council phone tree was utilized in alerting people of the exercise. The County OES has a new, updated version of the reverse 911 system used to call people in case of an emergency. Ken requested that future exercises take place in other areas of Logtown.
  • Good signage is important when locating residences in case of emergency. Have the house address on both sides of the mail box and at the house itself and use 4 inch reflective numbers. Proper signage is especially important when fire fighters from out of the area are looking for an address. An example of correct signage can be seen at 7001 Crystal Boulevard.
  • Rich Englefield - Hydrant checks have been delayed due to the demands of the recent Angora Fire at South Lake Tahoe. A meeting will be held with representatives of the LFSC on August 23 for training. Grants are being sought to develop GIS mapping have the location of all fire hydrants available on each engine in the district.

Neighborhood Coordinator update (Ken Hasse)

  • A coordinator is still needed for the Monitor area including the end of Dolomite and part of Galena. A Neighborhood Coordinator meeting will be scheduled for the near future.
  • Vicki Yorty displayed a map of California showing the fire danger areas. She had pictures that were taken of the aftermath of the Angora Fire.
  • Grant money was received from BLM , for the EDCFSC senior assistance program to assist those who can't do defensible space work.
  • The utilization of green waste dumpsters has been a successful program. The chipping program will extend through October. Make arrangements for the chipper in advance and find out how long the waiting list is before cutting and piling brush. Have the piles to be chipped at roadside before requesting to have them chipped. The form for requesting chipping is available online at edcfiresafe.org.
  • CalFire is investigating the cause of local fires. Arson is very difficult to determine. The cause of the recent Church Mine fire is under investigation.
  • Give the completed structure evaluation forms to Ken at the Coordinators' meeting. He will then give them to Erik Peterson.
  • Stan Farrelle was introduced. He is a retired fire captain from Alameda County who is working part time in the office of the Diamond Springs/El Dorado Fire Protection District. One can contact him for questions concerning defensible space. He has complaint forms to be used for those needing to comply with defensible space requirement.

Adjourn: The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 AM. The next meeting will be August 11, 2007.
